Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva
Bearing suffering through great vows, guiding the departed toward liberation and the living toward peace

The great vows and compassion of Ksitigarbha
Ksitigarbha does not turn away from the realms of darkness or abandon those burdened by wrongdoing and suffering. With unwavering vows, the Bodhisattva bears the hardships of sentient beings. This care embraces both the liberation and repose of the departed and the strength the living need to find peace in body and mind when facing loss, regret, and the past.
The vows of Ksitigarbha never exclude beings because of their past, and this compassion does not cease in the face of grave wrongdoing or suffering. Through these vows, beings are guided to face cause and effect, repent their mistakes, and cultivate good deeds. Past wounds can become opportunities for awakening, and unresolved attachments can find a compassionate refuge.
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva cares for the possibility of every life moving beyond suffering toward goodness, as well as for life’s end.
In paying homage to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, we pray:
- May the departed be freed from suffering and receive the blessings of rites for their liberation.
- May our ancestors receive blessings, fulfilling our wishes of filial devotion.
- May karmic obstacles gradually diminish and roots of goodness grow.
- May we let go of the past and regain peace in body and mind.
Begin with repentance and take good deeds as your foundation, so that life may return to clarity.
Through boundless vows, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva protects all suffering beings. May every sincere prayer become strength to move beyond suffering toward goodness. May the living find peace, may the departed receive dedicated merit, and may both share in compassion.
